Why am I seeing 429 or “Too many requests”?

What a temporary request limit means and how to avoid extending it.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Pause repeated attempts and follow any retry time shown. Changing a VPN or repeatedly refreshing is not a reliable way to clear an account or service limit.

Applies to
People limited during sign-in, signup, email requests or another account action.

What this message means

A 429 response indicates a request limit. Depending on the action, the limit can apply to an account, connection or service rather than just your IP address.

What to do

  1. Stop repeated submissions and close duplicate tabs making the same request.
  2. Follow any waiting period displayed by the app.
  3. After that period, make one attempt using the correct details.
  4. If no period is shown or the message persists, contact support.

Do not cycle VPNs, automate retries or create another account to get around a limit. There is no single waiting period that applies to every 429 response.

Give support useful context

Include the action you were taking, the error text and approximate time with timezone. If this involved an email request, mention whether any message eventually arrived.

A temporary limit does not confirm that your password is wrong, nor does it mean a payment failed. Check a payment’s status before considering another transfer.
